The Daruma doll is a figurine traditionally found in Japan. Its appearance and name derive from those of Bodhidharma, the legendary founder of the Chinese branch of the Zen school.

In both representations, he is bearded and hairy. Being Indian, he could not be otherwise.

The doll is purchased, a wish is made, and one eye is painted. The other will then be added when the wish comes true.

Yes, but why Bodhidharma? The figure is famous for his patience. Among other things, he meditated for seven years while staring fixedly at a wall.

Patience is a virtue highly regarded by the Japanese.
