Il sarumawashi 猿回し indica un'antica forma di intrattenimento traducibile letteralmente come "girare la scimmia" inteso come "fare danzare".

Fu introdotta in Giappone circa mille anni fa dalla Cina ma con funzione rituale, al tempo si pensava che le scimmie potessero curare i cavalli e proteggere le stalle. Solo successivamente le loro danze rituali divennero uno spettacolo che si diffuse in tutto il Giappone. Il sarumawashi entrò a fare parte anche della letteratura teatrale giapponese, con rappresentazioni nel Bunraku e nel Kyōgen.

Lo spettacolo del sarumawashi avveniva nelle strade dove la scimmia e il suo addestratore organizzavano spettacoli con danze, acrobazie e intermezzi comici. La modernizzazione ha visto la lenta scomparsa del sarumawashi e negli anni '70 ne rimaneva solo un vago ricordo.

A fine anni '70 nasce la Suo Sarumawashi che si impegna a far rinascere quest'antica forma di spettacolo, fonda un teatro e riesce anche a vincere nel 1991 un prestigioso premio al Festival delle Arti del Giappone. Dal 1992 si impegna a portare il Sarumawashi in giro per il mondo con spettacoli con il tutto esaurito finanche in America.❤️

Sarumawashi 猿回し is an ancient form of entertainment that can be literally translated as 'turning the monkey' meaning 'making the monkey dance'.

It was introduced to Japan about a thousand years ago from China but with a ritual function, at the time it was thought that monkeys could cure horses and protect stables. Only later their ritual dances become a spectacle that spread throughout Japan. The sarumawashi also became part of Japanese theatre literature, with performances in Bunraku and Kyōgen.

The sarumawashi show took place in the streets where the monkey and its trainer organised performances with dances, acrobatics stunts and comic skits. Modernisation saw the slow disappearance of the sarumawashi and by the 1970s only a vague memory remained.

At the end of the 1970s, Suo Sarumawashi was founded, committed to reviving this ancient form of art. It founded a theatre and even managed to win a prestigious award at the Japan Arts Festival in 1991. Since 1992 he has been committed to taking Sarumawashi around the world with sold-out shows, even in America.❤️
