ITA L'engawa 縁側, i cui ideogrammi significano letteralmente bordo e lato, è una parte della casa tradizionale giapponese a metà tra una veranda e un porticato.

La sua struttura è costituita da un pavimento in legno di circa un metro di larghezza, talvolta laccato, che può arrivare a circondare l'intero edificio. Nei templi può arrivare fino a tre metri.

Generalmente è posto oltre le shōji 障子, le porte scorrevoli interne, ma entro le amado 雨戸, le porte esterne. Non mancano comunque le eccezioni con engawa senza amado.

L'engawa permette alla casa di rimanere aperta senza essere troppo esposta alle intemperie. La casa è così ben areata sia col sole che con la pioggia oltre che poter godere di un ampia veduta sull'esterno.

La parte sottostante il porticato è inclinata rispetto all'edificio per permettere alla pioggia di defluire facilmente.

La struttura è sorretta da montanti identici a quelli della casa e, a seconda della costruzione, può prendere nomi diversi. ❤️

The engawa 縁側, whose ideograms literally mean edge and side, is a part of the traditional Japanese house similar to a veranda or a porch.

Its structure consists of a wooden floor about a metre wide, sometimes lacquered, which can run around the entire building. In temples it can be up to three metres wide.

It is generally placed beyond the shōji 障子, the internal sliding doors, but within the amado 雨戸, the external doors. However, there are exceptions with engawa without amado.

The engawa allows the house to remain open without being too exposed to bed weather. The house is thus well ventilated in both sunny and rainy days, as well as having a wide view of the outside.

The part underneath the porch is sloped away from the building in order to carry the water away, often to a collector drain.

The structure is supported by uprights identical to those of the house and, depending on the construction, may be given different names.❤️
